“I am a prince”, maintains Tamino when he first meets Papageno. The birdcatcher laughs him in the face for this, because Tamino looks more like a bricklayer. Together they are to rescue Pamina from Sarastro’s palace. When the unequal friends bit by bit really do turn into a noble prince and a birdcatcher, the public sees it happening at first hand.
