Richard Strauss (1864–1949) was immediately carried away when he saw Oscar Wilde’s drama “Salomé” in 1902 in Berlin. “The piece cries out for music”, he declared, and set to work on a score which remains unparalleled to this day: never before had the vibrancy of a sultry tropical night been captured in tones so suggestively, never before had music of such overwhelming sensuality been written.
Today “Salome” has long since ceased to play the part of a scandal shocker. Time has not so much overlaid it with patina as uncovered more and more new facets of this fascinating female figure. Salome lends herself to several interpretations, from the men-consuming vamp to the luxury spoilt kitten to a young woman fleeing towards being somehow different; her tragedy is heightened by the unconditional, immoderate nature of her attempts to escape from the life in which she is captive. She tears open a world that itself disintegrates, not least through Herod’s call to “kill that woman!”
